People My Brother Jim Looks Like #7

Ah yes, it's been a while, but finally another is unearthed in the form of actor Eric Balfour, aka Milo from 24.

My finger ever on the pulse of popular culture five years after the event, I'm just getting round now to watching the first series. I was in my first year of university when it was originally shown and we had a clear house rule: no talking in the TV room when 24 was on. This was - correctly - to avoid incessant questions along the lines of "Who's he again? What's he doing? Well, why's he doing that?" which would have led to the questioner suffering an impromptu assassination attempt on the spot. So I missed a couple of episodes and never caught up.

24? Ah, yes! Once again we are in the hallowed realms of "stupidly good" - the ultimate Simon Dillon accolade.

Well, series 1 and 2 are anyway. The remaining series are merely brilliant.

If you are a 24 virgin, and someone tries to talk to you about the plot, my suggestion is to shout LAH! LAH! LAH! LAH! very loudly and put your hands over your ears, like Eddie Murphy at the start of Beverly Hills Cop. Alternatively, you could kill them. In a court of law, you could probably argue justifiable homicide, especially if the murdered party was about to ruin some of the sublime plot twists in series 1 or 2.

Simon, when you write 'stupidly good', do you mean 24 is good in a stupid way, good despite the fact that it's stupid upon close examination, or frighteningly good?

I daren't give any other possibilities for fear of assassination. And I promise I won't shout LAH! LAH! LAH! when you give your answer too!

Charles, you have unearthed another gem in the 'People My Brother Jim Looks Like' series. I had no idea there were so many Jim lookalikes out there. If only I had more time to perform the required extensive research....

In response to Sean, by "stupidly good" I mean that its superb, sublime, amazing, magnificent, incredible, brilliant, and any other superlative you can think of.

Other things that fall into the "stupidly good" category:

The Lord of the Rings books (and the Peter Jackson films).

The most recent series of Doctor Who (except the Love and Monsters episode which is the only dud).

U2's Vertigo tour live from Chicago.

My 100 greatest films of all time (which I won't list here, but can be viewed at the link below).

I think what Simon means is that 24 is so good it's retarded.

Was only able to tick 41 of your top 100, Simon. Terrible. Made me realise how many films I pay lip service to as "classics" without actually having seen them.

24 has only come to Philippine TV sets just last year. Very good. But due to evening classes, missed a good lot of episodes.

At long last!

May I firstly congratulate Sean on his wonderful radio edit of RTI's ridiculous news intro. Excellent stuff, good range of war criminals references in there.

24, I can take or leave. Jack Bauer is not our saviour, nor is he in fact real, despite the continuing delusion of 79% of the TV-watching population. Lost is far more intriguing, and what's more I'm up with it.

Can I finish by referring you all to my account of my travels to Germany in my own blog, situated within my hyperlinked name here. Thankyou in advance. :D

Chas, what on Earth are you doing using the word 'schlock' on international radio? I demand an explanation...

Easy - I'm a schlock jock, like Howard Stern.
